French Toast Caramel Twist (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

01 - 1 whole French bread loaf, cut into thick slices.
02 - 5 eggs, large in size.
03 - 1 cup full-fat milk.
04 - 1 cup of half-and-half cream.
05 - 1 teaspoon pure vanilla.
06 - 2/3 cup sugar (save extra to sprinkle).
07 - 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ground.
08 - 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, ground.
09 - 1/4 cup butter, unsalted.
10 - Maple syrup, optional for serving.

# Instructions:

01 - Spread butter over a 9x13-inch dish and arrange the bread pieces in one layer.
02 - In a big bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, milk, vanilla, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon until well-mixed.
03 - Drizzle the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices so they soak it all up.
04 - Cover with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge overnight to let flavors meld.
05 - When ready to bake, set the oven to 350°F and let it preheat.
06 - Remove the plastic, then scatter small bits of butter on the bread. Top it off with a sprinkle of sugar.
07 - Pop it in the oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until it puffs up and the surface is golden.
08 - Let it cool slightly. Add another layer of sugar on top, then broil quickly to caramelize it.

# Notes:

01 - Stale bread works better for texture.
02 - Press the bread into the liquid as you assemble it.
03 - Try orange zest or almond flavoring for variety.
04 - Keep an eye on it while broiling—it can burn fast.
05 - Store in the fridge for up to three days.
06 - Warm up at 325°F for about 10 to 15 minutes.
